I am completely exhausted. This exhaustion started within the last week and I'm surprised it took so long to kick in. Most people I talk to say they were exhausted the very first part of pregnancy. I thought I was so lucky to escape this pregnancy symptom, but now I know it was too good to be true. But all in all, I'd rather be tired than sick. And the nausea has eased up a ton lately. I would say I'm about 90% back to normal in terms of the "all day" sickness. I still have to eat often, but I don't mind that part :)
Back to the exhaustion...it kicks in about mid-afternoon usually a couple hours after lunch. And it lasts until my head hits the pillow at bedtime. I've had to put my head down on my desk for a few minutes some days at work, which works until the phone rings or someone walks in. We have a couch in our lobby at the office and my boss said I should lay down on the couch for 30 minutes if I'm tired, but I haven't done that (yet). I don't want to be lounging around if a customer walks through the door. But glad to know it's an option.
That being said, I'm getting extra tired just thinking about being tired! Adam is out running and training for his adventure race in June. When he gets home, I'm cooking breakfast food for dinner. It's the only thing we have on hand without making a 5th trip to the store this week, so it'll have to do. Then I will probably drop. Wow, what a wild Friday night!
Thanks for listening to me vent...
Love,
Sarah

13 Weeks
I am so bummed...after reading the Baby Center web site it says that I won't be out of the 1st trimester until next week! Ahh! How much longer can this go on? I guess another week would be the answer to my question. I feel like I'm never getting out of this first phase. Ok, moving on to this week's progress...
Baby Emmett:
Fingerprints have formed on the baby's tiny fingertips, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head. (Thank God!) If it's a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. She is almost 3 inches long, the size of a medium shrimp, and weighs nearly an ounce.
Mommy Emmett:
This is the last week of my first trimester, and the risk of miscarriage is now much lowre than earlier in pregnancy. Next week marks the beginning of the 2nd trimester, a time of relative comfort for many women who see early pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness and fatigue subside. I should be getting about 300 more extra calories a day when pregnant (that's it??).
Back to work...

My Day
Today is my special day...my birthday! Of course I look forward to this day all year because it's the one day where everything is totally my call and I love it! Wow, what a weekend we've had. I got a 4 day weekend and it's finally coming to a close. On Saturday we ran around running errands and grocery shopping for our big event on Sunday. We decided to have a house warming party for our family, immediate and extended. So we had parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. over at our house on Sunday afternoon. I guess it was about 20-25 people. It was such a lovely day, but it's always a little stressful to get everything done and in order in time. Especially when 1 of the 2 coordinators is pregnant! My hormones were a little wacky under the circumstance, but I'm glad I got to enjoy the party and the company. We grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and had plenty of sides and desserts. I was so glad that almost everyone we invited were able to come. It meant so much to us. After the party, we crashed, but it was well worth it.
Then on Monday we slept in and later enjoyed a Chick-fil-a breakfast on our patio. We let the cats play while we ate and they do much better outside in the mornings, I think because they are not as hyper at that time of day so they stay closer to the house and don't make us run after them. Then we went to the North GA outlet mall, per my request, so I could do a little shopping with my birthday money. My pants are barely fitting and I need some more longer, looser shirts so we got many items at the outlet stores. We didn't stay for too long because we got a late start to our day to begin with. We were planning on seeing a movie, but it just didn't work out. Then our friends from church called to say they were having a cookout Monday night and we decided it would be fun to attend. After that, we crashed again. I seem to be getting tired more so at this stage in my pregnancy. Not totally exhausted, but definitely worn out after a lot of activity.
And today Adam surprised me by taking a personal day from work and spending the whole day with me! My boss gave me the day off today without me even asking. How great is that! So I was excited but not sure what I'd do all day by myself. I didn't want it to be a boring, typical day so I was thrilled that Adam kept me company. Again, we enjoyed a Chick-fil-A breakfast out on our patio. Then I wanted to go to our pool for the first time this summer. We headed down there after breakfast only to find that it was closed due to fecal matter in the pool! YUCK!!! We still layed out though and read our books for about an hour. We just had to drizzle our water bottles over ourselves when we started to get a little hot. Needless to say, we had the whole pool area to ourselves. Then we got cleaned up and went to eat lunch at Olive Garden, at my request. I was really wanting their minestrone soup and I can get soup, salad & breadsticks for a cheap price for lunch. Then we went shopping again & I found some cute maternity clothes at Old Navy! I bought a black skirt and black pants, which I can wear to work. They are both so comfortable. I must find more! I'm thinking of going to a maternity thrift store. There is one close by called the Funky Monkey which looks promising. Anyway, then we ran a couple errands and came home for a short while to crash. I took a short nap. Then we went out for icecream at the Frosty Frog Creamery. Such cute names! And now we're home and I'm catching up on email and watching TV. We haven't even been hungry for dinner since we had ice cream about 5pm, but Adam just left to get us Zaxby's salads. I'm so glad that this actually sounds good to me again. Salads have been on my "no thanks" list lately. Granted I get the Zaxby's salad with the fried chicken in it and toast, but it's as healthy as I want to get.
Signing off for tonight...

Baby Bump
I think I'm finally getting to experience my first noticeable baby bump. I have been able to tell for many weeks that my very lower tummy is firmer and larger, but not enough to where it was noticeable with clothes on. Today I'm wearing jeans and a comfy polo shirt which is not tight per se, BUT Adam & I definitely noticed this morning that there is a noticeable baby bump! This bump certainly gets larger after I eat a big meal! This is exciting news to me because everyone's been saying "You're still skinnier than ever...you don't even look pregnant." Now the proof will show! Granted I don't think anyone who saw me on the street would think twice about it, but those who know me and my body type may be able to concur with our observance.
I've also hit the 12 week mark, however I was bummed to know that I won't officially be out of the 1st trimester until 13 weeks. I thought once 12 weeks rolled around I would be home free, but apparently I need to wait another week until the 12 weeks are totally over. It'll be here before I know it I guess. I'm still nauseaus at times, but I've got my system where if I eat every single hour, I'm ok. Literally, EVERY hour. And I started cooking again this week, so I think it's a good sign that my blues may be coming to a close.
Here's the 12 week rundown...
Baby Emmett:
The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. The baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. If I poke my abdomen, the baby will squirm in response, although you won't be able to feel it. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder. Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly and in his brain, synapses are forming furiously. His faces looks unquestionably human: his eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be. From crown to rump, the baby is just over 2 inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs 1/2 an ounce.
Mommy Emmett:
Ah, enough about me...
Have a fabulous long weekend!

11 Weeks
I am now 11.5 weeks and counting! Here's what's been going on in my tummy this week...
Baby Emmett:
Our baby, just over 1.5 inches long and about the size of a fig, is now almost fully formed. Her hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of her bones are beginning to harden. She's already busy kicking and stretching, and her tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as her body grows and becomes more developed and functional. I won't feel these acrobatics for another month or two, nor will I notice the hiccupping that may be happening now that her diaphram is forming.
Mommy Emmett:
Most women feel a little bit more energetic now with lessening nausea (not yet for me). Unfortunately, constipation is common due to hormonal changes which slow digestion (no comment). Heartburn is also common due to hormones which relax the valve between my stomach and esophagus. I shouldn't worry if nausea has made it impossible to eat a wide variety or healthy foods or if I haven't gained much weight yet. Most women gain 2-5 lbs during the first trimester. My appetite should return soon, and I'll soon start to gain a pound a week.
Interesting fact I heard on the radio last week...pregnant women experiencing heartburn are more likely to have hairy babies. Ha! The same hormone responsible for heartburn is responsible for the production (or overproduction) of hair. The lady who wrote "What to Expect When You're Expecting" sorted this myth vs. fact tale. It's true!
No heartburn for me, although my acid reflux (a different kind called GERD) is acting up lately since I'm unable to take my normal medication for the problem. It doesn't cause heartburn because the acid goes into my throat. Just annoying coughs and clearings of my throat. No pain.

Hormones
This is the one topic that makes Adam cringe...hormones, and especially pregnancy hormones. Boy have I been going through them all recently. One minute I'm happy and sweet, then in a matter of minutes I can turn into a moody monster. I have to admit, yesterday was probably one of my worst "hormonal" days yet. Some of the day went smoothly and everything in my world seemed to be fine. And then other parts of the day were torturesome. I don't know if it was worse for me or Adam. I was frustrated, sad, angry, embarrased, bothered, disappointed and upset. Part of this was due to some events that unfolded throughout the day. My world just gets turned upside down when things don't go as planned. And part of it was simply unexplainable. I ended the day as a weepy mess, but Adam helped me feel better. Luckily he didn't get so fed up that he just left me alone (although sometimes this is what I want). He gave me a massage and tickled my back and arms as I went to bed. This put me into a relaxed state and I quickly fell asleep.
Then it all ended at midnight when a loud bang sounded through the house. We all jumped (even the cats) and Adam got up to check the house. We had no idea what it was but it was definitely something. Adam didn't see anything but we thought it could have been the "other" cat that lurks outside and peeks at our cats throught the windows. We thought he could have jumped on our new patio furniture or knocked something over outside. So we went back to sleep never knowing what it was. And then I discovered it once I woke up and went into the laundry room to fluff some work pants. The new jug of laundry detergent fell from the high sitting rack onto the washer. There was green liquid detergent all over the place, which I couldn't leave because the cats would get into it or someone would slip and fall. So I cleaned it up and went about my way. At least we know what the commotion was.
Who knows what the rest of today will hold. So far work is really quiet and slow, which could be a bad thing or a good thing depending on how you look at it.

Doctor's Visit (11 Weeks)
Our doctor's visit today was a bit terrifying, for me that is. First let me say that today was the day when I had to get my blood drawn for the 1st time, and I've been dreading it. I have tried not to think about it but the thought creeps me out. Adam & I started our morning with a Chick-fil-A breakfast (on the run) so my day got off to a great start needless to say. We arrived at 9:15am for our appointment and I was taken back immediately. I peed in a cup, was weighed (I've gained half a pound so far) and had my blood pressure taken (it was low, which is excellent). Then the waiting began. We waited and waited and waited some more. In fact, we waited in the patient room for 45 minutes! Our nerves were on edge because Adam had to be back at work at a certain time and we hadn't even done the ultrasound or bloodwork (which is primarily why Adam was there). I laid down on the table while Adam played a game on his phone. We were getting impatient.
Turned out one of the nurses had to leave early and the doctor I was seeing had to scramble to pick up the extra patients. So in the meantime a midwife came to our rescue and began the process. Then the torture got worse. She was conducting the ultrasound and could not find the baby's heartbeat. She used 2 different machines and nothing! You can imagine how nervous we were, but she assured me that this happens frequently. She asked if my uterus tilts back (hugh??) which would affect where the baby was hiding. After turning to plan B she gave me a pelvic exam and did confirm that my uterus does tilt back. Ok, good to know I guess.
Then I had to move rooms, dressing and then undressing again, to use different equipment to find the baby. The midwife said I have a stubborn baby (Hmmm, I wonder who it gets that from?). But after using different equipment we were finally able to see the baby on the screen. It even wiggled around! Then the real doctor came in to try to get a stable and better picture on the screen, which she did. We saw the heart beating on the screen, but we didn't actually hear it. It's amazing how much bigger and more defined the photo is. We can clearly see the head and eyes. Adam thinks it looks like pig with a snout. The head is literally half the size of it's body! I think it looks like an alien. But, whew! What a relief. Little buggar! Adam teases that as soon as the baby's born, it's getting 2 spankings...one for making mommy sick and the other for pulling this stunt. Just kidding, of course.
Then the real torture began, the blood work. I was first sat in a chair and I immediately told the lady that I will absolutely not let her come near my arms to draw blood. I have a phobia involving this area. I asked that she take it in my hand. This was a process because my hands were cold and she could not get a good vein. I had to squeeze this ball and hold my hands a certain way. She tried one, then the other, and no vein. Then she said I need to lie down in a room and off we were again to another room. I laid on the table and she finally was able to make it work with my right hand. Thank God!!! It was uncomfortable but I made it through. What an ordeal!
But all in all, the most important thing is this cute little baby that's already giving us fits. I've been looking at the ultrasound photo all day and imagining how our lives will change in several months. I can't wait to meet him/her!

10 Weeks
Here's what's been going on this week:
Baby Emmett:
Though he's barely the size of a kumquat (just over an inch long and weighing less than a quarter of an ounce), he's now completed the most critical portion of his development. This is the beginning of the fetal period, a time when tissues and organs in his body rapidly grow and mature. He's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs, including kidneys, intestines, brain and liver are in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout my pregnancy. Tiny nails are forming on fingers and toes and peach-fuzz hair is beginning to grow on tender skin. The limbs can bend now. His hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over his heart and his feet may be long enough to meet in front of his body. The outline of his spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from his spinal cord. His forehead temporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on his head, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump, he's about 1.25 inches long. In the coming weeks, he will double in size to nearly 3 inches.
Mommy Emmett:
Before I got pregnant, my uterus was the size of a pear. Now it is the size of a grapefruit. Though I'm not ready for maternity wear, my regular clothes are becoming uncomfortably tight. That's about it for me. Nausea is still kicking in.
Did I mention literally at the stroke of midnight on the start of Mother's day (midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning), I threw up for the very 1st time in pregnancy. I tease that this was a mother's day gift from the baby. How crazy it that?

Happy Mother's Day
Here's a shout-out to all you moms tuning in...Happy Mother's Day!! I celebrated being a mom this year even though the baby has not yet arrived quite yet. He/she is still a live human being, so technically I'm a mom! Adam got me 2 mommy books (as requested), A book of baby names & meanings & "What to Expect When You're Expecting." I've started reading a little of both and am enjoying each one. He also got me lavendar tulips and a singing card. It was lovely :)
We had such a busy weekend that I feel like I need a weekend to recover from this weekend. As previously noted, Adam, my dad & I drove to and from Statesboro this Friday/Saturday. It was a nice but brief stay. We got to see Dan graduate on Saturday, but barely. He had a health scare and ended up in the EMT unit just moments before he was supposed to walk. He almost didn't walk because he felt very dizzy and weak. He could barely stand. But his girlfriend Stevie got him some food and a drink and he seemed to be ok after that. Probably low blood sugar or something. The important thing is that he got to participate in his graduation and it was short, sweet and to the point. Always drama in our family! Just enough to keep life interesting!
On Sunday we went to church and later went out for lunch with his parents and brother Daniel. We ate Japanese and it was yummy in my prego tummy! Then they dropped by our house for a few minutes so Daniel could see the place. It was a fun day, but I was worn out by the end of it. Adam went to the grocery store Sunday evening while I napped on the couch while watching a "Jon & Kate + 8" marathon. Wow that show is so stimulating. With 2 parents and 8 kids, it's so chaotic that after a while my brain can't take the madness!
I'm about to hit the bed...I can barely keep my eyes open. Good night, all...

Ole'
I'm not quite sure what Ole' means in Spanish, but it sounds like a party word and it's suitable on many levels. First, Monday was Cinco de Mayo. Second, I have been absolutely craving Mexican food (mostly chips and salsa) this week. And third, we're getting ready to celebrate my brother Dan's college graduation! So ole' to all. Let the fiesta begin.
Yesterday was my Friday since I have today off work. Did you get that? Last night Adam & I went to Las Palmas to eat a mexican dinner. It was SO good!! I got my fill of chips and salsa, chicken tacos and rice. Adam loved it because I rarely want Mexican food and he could eat it all the time. So we normally don't eat at Mexican restaurants together unless I'm in the mood.
I arose this morning super early and began laundry, painting my nails and will soon start packing for our trip. I also have to run errands and get the cats settled, etc. Then we will drive to Snellville where we will pick up my dad and head to Dublin for the night. And yes, my parents are still together in case that crossed someone's mind. Unfortunately, my mom can't make it to the graduation because she has her monthly doctorate class in another state. She is presenting tomorrow and cannot skip class for any reason. She is beside herself, but we are planning on taking our video camera and digital camera so hopefully she will feel apart of the festivities. Oh, and since there were no available hotels in Statesboro, Dublin was the closest other option. Then we will get up early tomorrow morning and drive to Statesboro for Dan's big day. Hooray for him! I know he must be thrilled to be done with the torture. And it sounds like we may go to Savannah after the graduation to eat lunch since Statesboro has limited restaurant options and the ones available will be super crowded. I hope the weather is nice so I can take in some rays! My pale skin desperately needs it.
Oh, and by the way...we are 10 weeks in the running!

Random
There is no theme or real purpose to this blog entry, so please leave behind all expectations. I am writing not knowing what to write, so this could be interesting. It seems there's not any news to share and nothing exciting is happening at the moment. I'm just sitting here in a relaxed mood (I've had my dinner, bath and am in my PJ's)...wow, who sounds like the baby here? I will likely go down for my bedtime within the hour. Hee, hee.
Today was an ok day. Not bad, not excellent, just ok. I worked of course. The fans are still a blowin' in the office. I went to the chiropractor after work, got gas (in my car, that is), and cooked hamburgers and tator tots for dinner. Adam loves his tots! We let the cats outside after dinner and they went on a rampage. Baloo got in trouble for climbing over the rusty fence behind our property and into the woods. I had to climb over the fence in my work clothes and shoes to try to catch him. Then he found it humorous to run all over our yard, the neighbors, front and back, side to side. I couldn't catch him and I finally gave up and acted like he wasn't in trouble. Once he didn't see me as a threat, he calmly walked over near me. Then I snatched him up and threw him inside. He got to watch through the glass while Daisy played in the grass. She played with a moth for most of the time. Adam cleaned the kitchen while I got my bath, a nightly occasion. And here I am. Told you nothing exciting is happening. Just a typical day I suppose.
Off to watch the American Idol results show. Jason Castro is SO gone. C-ya!

Whirlwind
I am in a whirlwind today...literally. Our toilet at work decided to quit working for the fourth time in a few months. Over the weekend, the floater thingy broke and the water ran all weekend. So we came in to a swamp-like mess this morning. The carpet in 3 rooms was soaked with water and we had to call in a restoration company to clean up the mess. The crew spent an hour this morning tearing up flooring and placing all of our bathroom items down the hall, in the kitchen, etc. It's a war zone around here. And to top it off, we have 12 huge blowers placed throughout the agency that have sounded like a cyclone all day long. Ahhh! Luckily I don't get headaches, but this chaos could very well cause one. It's been a constant loud buzz noise ALL DAY! I can barely hear the phone ringing, but luckily the phones haven't been busy today. Thank God! Oh, and I'm SO glad I didn't wear a skirt today. What a show that would have been. I already feel like I'm in a modeling shoot walking down the hallway. My hair blows all over the place.
On another note, we had a fabulous weekend. Friday was low-key as usual. We saw the movie "Atonement." Very good. Then Saturday we got up and did a few things around the house before heading up to Blairsville for the day. My 3rd cousin Jessica got married Saturday evening and so we got to see the fam again. We hung out at my grandparents (Babelle & Paw) house for several hours before and after the wedding since they live right across the street from the wedding location. It was a beautiful outdoor wedding with a breathtaking mountain view. And the weather turned out nice. It was sunny and warm for the ceremony. Plus Babelle made her famous fried chicken with sides and desserts. Yummy! We got home fairly late on Saturday night and crashed. Then we slept in on Sunday and went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. We did grocery shopping and headed back to the home-front. I took a much needed nap yesterday with my baby Boo (the cat), while Adam worked on his man-projects. You know, hanging stuff and killing ants, running up to Home Depot. Boy stuff. Then we ended the evening with small group at church. Our newly-wed group is meeting on Sunday nights for the time being. We had a blast with the gang!

9 Weeks (& 1 Day)
Here's the news on us this week:
Baby Emmett:
Baby Emmett is nearly an inch long - about the size of a grape - and weighs just a fractin of an ounce. She's starting to look more and more human. Her essential body parts are accounted for, though they'll go through plenty of fine-tuning in the coming months. Her heart finishes dividing into 4 chambers and the valves start to form. Her tiny teeth also begin to form. The embryonic "tail" is completely gone. The baby's organs, muscles and nerves are kicking into gear. The external sex organs are there but won't be distinguishable as male or female for another few weeks. Her eyes are fully formed, but her eyelids are fused shut and won't open until 27 weeks. She has tiny earlobes, and her mouth, nose and nostrils are more distinct. The placenta is developed enough now to take over most of the critical job of producing hormones. Now that the baby's basic physiology is in place, she's poised for rapid weight gain.
Mommy Emmett:
I still don't look pregnant, even though my waist is thickening. I feel pregnant, though. Not only are morning sickness and other physical symptoms out in full force, but I may also feel like an emotional pinball. Mood swings are common now (SEE, Adam!). It's perfectly normal to feel alternatley elated and terrified about becoming a parent. Most women find that moodiness flares up at around 6-10 weeks, eases up in the second trimester, and then reappears as pregnancy winds to a close.

Busy & Busier
This week has gone from busy to busier, and hopefully not to busiest! The past 2 days have been an absolute whirlwind in terms of work. It's been a productive change of pace, but boy am I worn out. I have barely had time to breathe! But now I'm taking some time to eat lunch in peace and communicate to all my fans...j/k.
Let's see, for some reason all I can think of to write about is work. My day started at 5am when my alarm first went off. Of course I snoozed for over 30 minutes and stumbled my way in the pitch black dark house downstairs to feed the cats. They go nuts in the morning for their wet food, and we have a routine every morning. As soon as my alarm first sounds (or the sun comes up), Boo (Baloo) starts rubbing his head against my face. I get a big dose of cat breath first thing in the morning, but I love every bit of it! He also steps all over me and meows, sometimes pulling my hair, and this continues until my feet hit the floor. Then he meows his way downstairs, running full force down the steps almost to the point where he smashes into something. He is such a boy, but a sweet boy! Daisy, on the other hand, waits quietly until I'm ready. Then she prefers for me to pick her up and carry her downstairs, purring all the way. I love my spoiled "babies!"
Anyway, I left the house just before 7am to attend the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting. It's a new thing I participate in for work every 1st Thursday of the month. It's great to go and they feed us well, but I'm extra tired all day as a result. Now I'm half way done with my day, just trying to make it until 6pm. Then I will leave work and go to the chiropractor. Then I'm home free to cook dinner (or maybe not tonight) and crash. Whew! Makes me exhausted just thinking about it! But usually my days aren't so bad. My work day usually starts at 9am and I get to sleep in until 7:15am. I'm plenty rested on most days since I go to bed early.
Today marks the beginnning of week 9 in the pregnancy. Month 3!!!
